Hilton Head Island, SC — Here for their annual retreat to Hilton Head Island, 197 students gathered at the Westin Hotel to create 25 original paintings to decorate the hallways of The Children’s Center at Jarvis Creek
Park. The students are part of the Emory Scholars Program, affiliated with Emory University in Atlanta, GA. The paintings depict creatures of the sea and natural wonders found in the Lowcountry.

“The students are going to love these paintings,” said Jody Levitt, Executive Director of The Children’s Center, who was on hand to see the students at work. “They are so joyful and we are pleased the Emory Scholars have honored us with their creativity.”

The Emory Scholars Program partnered with Wine and Design, an art studio located In Bluffton, and Destinations DMC, located in Hilton Head Island to create the paintings. Wine and Design supplied the canvases and paint and were on hand to offer artistic direction. Destinations DMC, a destination management company, arranged the Emory Scholar’s retreat.

“This project was ideal for our students,” said Dr. Lydia Soleil, Director of the Emory Scholars Program. “The Scholars are expected to focus on five areas: intellectual curiosity, creative thinking, servant leadership,
communications skills and contribution to the community.”

“We were thrilled to be a part of this project. The Emory Scholars did an amazing job on the art pieces,” said Cathy Tyson, owner of Wine and Design. “We hope the staff, children and families who are served by
The Children Center will enjoy the happiness that art brings to the soul every time they enter and walk through the hallways.”

Carol Kavanaugh-Arrington of Destinations DMC said, “This program was a great opportunity for the Scholars to leave an inspired mark on the lives of our young community on Hilton Head Island.”

The Children’s Center, a non-profit organization, was founded 50 years ago with 23 children in attendance. Today, more than 170 children each day receive high quality early childhood education and child care services for working families in the Lowcountry. This multicultural, bilingual program is provided five day a week, year around, from 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
